Refugios Salkantay

Salkantay trek in private cabins. Experience salkantay in a unique way, exploring and discovering her secrets while staying with local families. Refugios Salkantay Trek.

My sister and I travelled to Peru for 1 week to hike Salkantay. Communication with Edwin/Flor ahead of time was very good. They returned emails promptly. We were the only two people at the lodge during our stay. Edwin’s family was very attentive and concerned for our needs. His father welcomed us to the lodge after our first hike with appetizers and warm tea. Neither of us was fluent in Spanish, but we were able to understand directions and convey our needs. (We each have had basic Spanish education in high school and remember some of the essentials). There is no guide to accompany you on your hike, but the path is very well marked and there are plenty of other tour groups hiking the same trail. The trek is challenging and days are long, so don’t underestimate it, but it is so rewarding. We thought the meals were good and the accommodations were comfortable. We Definitely preferred this to sleeping in a tent like some of the other groups that we saw. Our most enjoyable night was our stay at the coffee plantation! We learned so much and enjoyed the company of Enrique and his family. Overall highly recommend if you are adventure seeking and would like to immerse yourself in local culture!

Flor and the Refugios families all made the Salkantay trek unforgettable. There might be hesitations given that you don’t have a guide but the trek is well marked, and each family cares utmost about your safety. The trek itself is beautiful, and having a real bed to sleep on every night ensures you’re fully rested for a long day of walking. An absolutely delightful way to make the journey to Machu Picchu.

Great group of family and friends that have a nice set up of lodges along the Salkantay trail. We enjoyed the food, company, and 4 day trek with some of the most beautiful scenery. Best price when compared to other agencies and get to sleep in lodges instead of tents. I would recommend them to any of my friends and family.

I have just completed a 5 day/4 night salkantay trek. What a great experience. Definitely different from the usual trek. The lodges are all beautiful, comfortable and unique. The food was great after a days trekking. Flor, Manuel and Sonia and their respective family members were do lovely and so welcoming. You could not ask for nicer people. The trek itself was beautiful and mostly undertaken independently with directions given at each stage by our hosts. If your looking for something a little bit different, family run with more of the profit going to the communities you visit then this is a great enterprise.

We organized a 4 day adventure with Refugios to conquer the Salkantay Trek. Everything from the early communications with Flor to the pick-up in Cuzco to the people we met along the way was so incredibly wonderful and life changing. We truly loved every minute of our journey (except maybe a couple of the thrilling car rides on mountain roads). The families we stayed with have left a lasting impression with us to share the amazing way of life in the Andes that every person exists in. The views along the way are indescribable although breathtaking does a good job of trying to describe. Our hosts and the accommodations were familiar and comfortable. We felt at home and safe during our trek. I would highly recommend this to anyone as an unforgettable experience that will impact the way you continue to live your own life. Thanks to the families along the way!

Room Tip: Depending on the time of year, weather can be variable to be sure to pack layers and good rain gear.

We did the Refugios Salkantay 4 day itinerary, and I can say without any doubt that there could’ve been no better way for us to experience the Salkantay trail. Flor and her network of friends and family were more than welcoming - and did everything to ensure we were comfortable, well fed and prepared for each step of the way. As soon as we arrived at Flor’s place in mollepata, she noted that our packs were significantly heavier than we needed. We had brought big packs as we had arrived directly from the airport so we didn’t get the chance to leave the bags at the hostel. However, Flor had a simple workaround and gave us a bag to discard extra intems in, which she promptly had sent to cusco where she also helped us make our hostel booking. After our hike, we arrived at our hostel in cusco and our stuff was safe and sound. The experience of staying with the families at Refugio’s Salkantay was truly one of a kind. With authentic food, expert guidance, even a lesson on how to procure coffee, avocados and other plant materials - The experience at Refugio’s Salkantay was a real highlight of my trip to Peru.

The family that organized the hike did everything to made us feel welcome every step along the way. The rooms, the food and the people were great. We enjoyed every minute of it and we would reccomend to everyone. The families who owned the rooms were we stayed at made us feel in a safe environment and we were treated as if we were part of the family. Thank you refugios Saltankay for your professionalism!

I had a fantastic experience with Refugios Salkantay. Despite my limited knowledge of Espanyol, I felt comfortable during my stay. Flor, Marino, Manuel, Sonja and everybody else were friendly and super helpful. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Refugios Salkantay to anybody else. It really felt like a personal experience and I didn’t feel like I was being rushed through on a ‘tour’ that has been done a hundred times before. I was just sorry I missed Pedro and his family on the second day! If you are looking for an authentic, semi-independent and caring way to reach Machu Picchu then Refugios Salkantay can’t be beaten. Thank you so much!

Using Refugios Salkantay was the best decision ever! Flor and her friends and family are very helpful and welcoming, especially Sami’s family in Lucmabamba!! Only complaint is that the food could have been more varied. Great service overall

An amazing experience with an beautiful family. Like in the description its a small business but there is still very much a loving and family touch. The trek was very well organized and they always knew where you were but we were also independent for most of the hiking which made the hike stress free and enjoyable. There was not a single moment where I felt I was unsafe or unsure where to go. We did have to carry our packs for much of the time but they helped transport our bags during the most difficult days. Each night accommodations were very differnet but surpassed my expectations. Each night we were fed good food and stayed warm with all the blankets provided. The first night was in a lodge with absolutely incredible views, the second night was a lodge in an area that even haf a bar with other campers from various groups. The third night was my favorite, we stayed with a beautiful family on a coffee platation. Although they didnt speak any english they were the sweetest and happiest hosts. They heard it was my husbands birthday so sonia woke up 5am to make him a birthday cake for breakfast!! They made our stay truly special. This is the best way to do the trek I am so happy I found this group. The only thing to keep in mind is that the family speaks no english but added to the experience for us! Thank you refugios for such a wonderful experience! I will be sending my friends your way!!

This is a great way to trek Salkantay while avoiding the larger guided groups, paying quite a bit less, and knowing all your money is going to local families. The trail is gorgeous, from alpine passes to cloud rainforest, though bring good shoes for slippery mud and rocks at some points, and pack light. Also, be ready for a little adventure and the need to be flexible. Since you’re not with a guide the whole time, you need to find your host at each stop, which is not always as easy as it may seem. 3 of my 4 hosts were extremely attentive and offered a great experience. Due to road conditions, one host could not arrive on time, and his family didn’t know to expect me, so they did not want to serve me dinner. Finally, a guided group took pity on me and fed me, and at 8 pm my host arrived and was super apologetic. That place too wasn’t a cozy home like to other nights, it was a hostel with many large groups, so know to expect that the second night. All in all, I’d recommend this, if you are up for a little adventure.

Our experience on the salkantay was incredible. My wife and I were worried about hiking it in the rainy season cause we didn’t want to wake up in the middle of the night soaked. After finding this place on airbnb we couldn’t have been more excited. It is affordable, and it seriously makes the hike so much better! We didn’t have to haul/rent a tent, pads, sleeping bags, or food for the trek. Each night we slept in a comfortable bed with lots of blankets for the cold. Very clean as well. In our opinion is is hands down the best way to do the hike. The family doesn’t speak English so you get fully immersed in the Peruvian culture. The food was excellent as well. All the other hikers who were camping got soaked during the cold nights and just seemed miserable compared to my wife and I. This is the ONLY way to hike salkantay! If you are thinking about it then book it!
